Saturday 9: Cruella de Vil

Cruella de Vil

Saturday 9: Cruella de Vil (1961)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In the original animated 101 Dalmations, this song is written by Roger, who gets his best ideas at the piano. Where do you feel most creative?  In my living room at home.  I need total silence to concentrate.  I have my best ideas at home when I can get some peace and quiet.

2) His piano is tucked away in a crowded attic. Does your home have an attic? If so, what do you keep up there?  Yes, we have an attic.  I think there is mostly Josh's things from when he was a baby.  We have a handmade cradle up there and some clothes he wore as a baby.

3) The inspiration for this song is his wife's old school chum, the very wealthy and very mean Cruella de Vil. Have you ever found you couldn't stand one of your spouse's or lover's friends?  no

4) Make no mistake, Cruella is a very bad lady. The American Film Institute named her #38 on their 100 Greatest Villains list. Tell us another nasty movie character who comes to mind.  Loki always comes to mind for me, but I love him, he is so funny.  I think he is handsome too.

 5) Cruella wanted to skin sweet little Dalmation puppies and make a coat. (We told you she was bad.) As winter wears on, could you use a new coat (though not one made from puppy fur!)?  I could use a heavy coat.

6) This song was written by Mel Leven, who did both words and music. Do you think you'd be more successful as a lyricist (words) or composer (music)?  Lyricist.  I do not know how to compose music at all.  I can write some. I would not be good at either of these.

7) 1961 was a big year for Disney. In addition to this animated movie, they had a hit with The Parent Trap, about twins who are reunited at summer camp. Approx. 1 in every 250 births results in twins. Are there any twins in your family?  not in mine, but Karl's Grandpa Ray was a twin.

8) Also in 1961, IBM introduced the Selectric typewriter. Amazon and Walmart both still sell typewriters. Do you own one?  no, but we had one in our house when I was little, my dad taught typing/keyboarding and business machines in high school.

9) Random question: When is the last time you took a nap?  I try not to take a nap so I can sleep at night, but before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started medicine, I took a nap every chance I got.  I was so tired.  I am fine now though.

Saturday 9: Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)

Rapid Roy (That Stock Car Boy)

Saturday 9: Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy) 1972

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics tell us that every Sunday afternoon we can find Roy at the racetrack. What are your plans for Sunday?  church, laundry and getting ready for work on Monday, it is a professional development day on Monday.

2) Roy is fearless behind the wheel of his '57 Chevrolet. But it's just natural to feel fear every now and again. What scares you?  snakes and mice, doing new things for the first time.  Losing loved ones.  The craziness of the world.

3) Roy's been photographed grinning with a toothpick in his mouth. Do you often use toothpicks? If so, do you carry them with you?  I use floss to get things out of my teeth.  I am not used to toothpicks.  My dad used them all of the time.

4) Legend has it Roy learned to drive fast when he ran moonshine out of Alabama. Moonshine usually refers to illegally produced whiskey. What was the last alcoholic beverage you drank?  I had a small glass of wine a few years ago at a shower for a friend.

5) This week's featured artist, Jim Croce, attended Villanova University, where he played in a band that performed at fraternity parties. When his band was chosen to tour Africa as part of a cultural exchange program, he was excited to learn his host country's customs. Have you ever traveled overseas? What did your trip teach you?  no, never traveled overseas.

6) Jim met his future wife, Ingrid, at a party. They discovered that they both loved Joan Baez and Woody Guthrie. Tell us about one of your friends, and what you two bonded over.  Many of my friends are teachers, so we bond over teaching, school stories, but we have gotten to know one another, we also like the same foods, reading and going to women's conferences.

7) Early in their marriage, while Jim was working hard to launch his music career, Ingrid helped make ends meet by baking bread and canning fruits and vegetables. Do you have any frugal cooking tips or "cheap eats" recipes to share?  I don't have anything to share..maybe I will update this answer later.  I cannot wait to read everyone's answers though.

8) In 1972, Mark Spitz became a sensation, winning seven Gold Medals for swimming. After making money in endorsements and TV appearances, he settled into a career as a realtor in Los Angeles. Are you contemplating a change in residence anytime soon?  no

9) Random question: Which of these "top ten" lists would you prefer to be on -- the sexiest, the smartest or the richest?  richest

Sunday Stealing- From the New York Times

From the New York Times

1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want
as a dinner guest?  My mom.  I couldn't care less about celebrities.
I just want to be with my family.

2. Would you like to be famous? In what way?  not at all

3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are
going to say? Why?  No, but I might think about things I want to talk
about so I do not forget anything during the call.

4. What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?  When things go well
and I feel good about the day.

5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?  I sing in the car
on the way to and from work, so Friday night would have been the last time
I sang to myself.  I sing to the kids every day, so also Friday I sang to the
kids in my class.

6. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body
of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?
would honestly wish for both, but I will say mind having to choose.

7. Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?  no, I try not
to let myself think about such things.

8. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.
politics, religious beliefs, we both like the same types of food.

9. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?  Jesus and Josh

10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised,
what would it be?  nothing

11. Describe your life in one paragraph. paragraph?  No, I will just say blessed.

12. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality
or ability, what would it be?  I would love to have my perfect vision back
I had when I was younger, and I would like to be thin again.  No body pains.

13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future
or anything else, what would you want to know?  What is our new school
building going to be like?  I want to see my new room in that crystal ball.
They are hoping to break ground soon after we get out of school in May.

14. Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why
haven’t you done it?  I just want to go on a vacation.  We haven't had the
money, but Karl works all of the time too.  I am hoping in the next couple
of years.

15. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?  Becoming a mom.  I was
so terrified to become a mom.  I was scared it would hurt really bad and I
would be a terrible mom.  It didn't hurt at all thanks to the epidural and
recovery wasn't too awful.  I was in my 20's, so it was fast.  I am not the
best mom in the world, but I sure do love it and Josh is such a blessing to me.

Saturday 9: Valentine

Valentine

Saturday 9: Valentine (1997)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Martina McBride asks what would happen if the sun refused to shine. How are the skies today where you are?  After all of the snow we had last week (I was off 3 days for snow), this week has been sunny and in the 50's.  It has been gorgeous.

2) She sings of a dream she's had 1,000 times before. Have you ever had a recurring dream?  no, I dream about random different things.

3) Martina has published two cookbooks and appears on The Food Network. Two favorite recipes are for peanut butter desserts: peanut butter/chocolate cookies and peanut butter/butterscotch squares. Is there peanut butter in your kitchen right now?  There is, we need to throw away our jar of peanut butter and get some new, but we also have Reese's Peanutbutter cups.

4) Before she was famous, Martina sold t-shirts at Garth Brooks' concerts. Her husband worked on Garth's sound crew and she pitched in. Do you have any concert t-shirts?  I had a Corey Hart t-shirt years ago, but I don't have it anymore.  I am not a collector of concert shirts.  I don't go to concerts really.  I went to a few when I was a kid.

5) Martina headlined a gala at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC. As our nation's capitol, Washington has many buildings of historic significance. If we were to visit your hometown, what landmarks would you direct us to?  We have the original Bass Pro shop here along with Wonders of Wildlife, Bass Pro's Aquarium.  We also have Table Rock Lake, Silver Dollar City and Branson.  There is a National Battlefield here also (Wilson's Creek).  The arch is in St. Louis, but I am not that close to St. Louis.

Since this is the Saturday 9 before Valentine's Day, we've got some questions inspired by the holiday.

6) Hearts are the symbol of Valentine's Day, so here's a little heart trivia: whales have largest heart of any animal. When we say a person is "big hearted," it means we think of them as generous. Think about the people in your life. Who would you describe as big hearted?  One of my co-workers (Kris) has a really big heart.  She is always helping people out one way or another.

7) It's estimated that 9 million people buy Valentine's Day presents for their dogs and cats. Have you ever purchased a holiday gift for a pet?  I buy them birthday and Christmas gifts.  One year they had Easter baskets, but that was for fun.  I put dog treats in plastic eggs and we had an Easter egg hunt for them.  They loved it.

8) Valentines to teachers are also big sellers. Did you ever have a crush on one of your instructors?  I don't think I ever did.

9) With the popularity of e-cards, fewer Valentine messages are sent via the USPS. What's the most recent thing you dropped into a mailbox?  Probably Christmas cards.  We pay our bills online.

we waited to watch him leave.  They pulled his car around to the front and he
was waiting for his wife.  He waved us over so he could talk to Josh.  I asked
if I could take a picture and he said yes.  He handed me several autographed
cards and asked me to give them to the kids which I did.  We had this photo
framed along with his autograph.  He was the nicest man.  He had a Cardinal
red car too. ♥  Josh was maybe 5 years old.  He had no idea who Stan was at

Saturday 9: Lady of Spain

Lady of Spain

Saturday 9: Lady of Spain (1952)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here

1) The lyrics refer to serenading "caballeros," which is Spanish for "gentlemen." Can you say anything to us in Spanish this morning?  Hola!  Buenos Dias!  I know more French than Spanish.  Sorry.

2) Eddie Fisher sings that he's loved this lady since he first saw her. Do you believe in love at first sight?  I have not experienced it, but I am sure that has happened for others.

3) He was drafted and served a year in Korea. Then he spent the rest of his active duty period as vocalist for the Army Band, performing on military bases. (He was still technically PFC Edwin Fisher when he recorded this.) Did you ever play with a band? If so, what instrument?  I was in band for a year, I played the flute.

4) From 1953 to 1957, Eddie hosted Coke Time, a TV variety show sponsored by Coca Cola. What's your soft drink of choice?  Pepsi

5) Though Coke Time is mostly forgotten today, Eddie was nominated for two Emmy Awards and won a Golden Globe for his work on the show. Have you ever taken home a trophy?  I don't believe so, I have received ribbons and small pins for letter jackets for things in high school, but I do not think I have received a trophy.

6) Today Eddie Fisher may be best known as the father of Carrie Fisher. She made more than 50 movies and wrote 8 books. Are you more familiar with her as an actress or author?  Actress, Star Wars.

7) In 1952, when this song was popular, hamburger meat sold for just 53¢/lb. Is there any beef in your refrigerator right now?  Yes, we have some hamburger in there that is ready to be cooked.

8) Also in 1952, Mr. Potato Head became the first toy to be advertised on TV. What recent TV commercial comes to mind?  Josh was showing me an old tv show today and one of the commercials was for Bab-O cleanser.  Removes Sink-Smog.  The show was The Kate Smith Evening Hour.

9) Random question: If you could live within any TV show ever, which would you choose?  Andy Griffith came to my mind for me.  Josh said Green Acres.

Tuesday 4 Meme- Back to School

                       Back to School

Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 dear friends.
I am so glad you are continuing to play along!

Let's go back to school today...

1. You are back in high school... what are you doing after school lately?
January/February probably going to a basketball game.

2. Do you do homework early or late? Do you really study?
I did homework early, but I did not really study much in
high school.  I was in college before I really studied much.

3. a, Do you go to the games? Football? Basketball.. what is
your favorite to attend?  I went to both.  My dad was a football coach, so
I always went to those, but I also loved going to basketball games.
I was in cheer, so I had to be at the games.   I would have gone anyway
though, I loved being with friends.

b. Do you go to the dances? Prom? (what'd you wear?)  I went to
several dances...homecoming and prom.  I wore dresses to homecoming
dances and a formal gown to prom.

4.Lunch! What are we having today? What is your favorite lunch? In
high school my favorite lunch at school was a BBQ sandwich, chips
and a drink.  I enjoy fried chicken, mashed potatoes and hot rolls as
a favorite school meal now.  I am not sure I have a favorite meal at home.
Maybe a tuna sandwich.
