Saturday 9: My Valentine

My Valentine

Saturday 9: My Valentine (2011)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Paul McCartney sings that he won't let a day go by without remembering why he loves his valentine. What blessings are you thankful for today?  I am thankful for God and my family.  I am also thankful for the book I am reading that became available during our snow days.  It is called The Sun Down Motel and it is excellent.  It is a murder/mystery/thriller.

2) Paul directed the video of Natalie Portman translating his song into American Sign Language (ASL), which is the third most commonly-used language in both the United States and Canada. British Sign Language (BSL), commonly used in EU countries, is very different. Do you find it easy to learn new languages?  I do, I love studying languages.  I took four years of French, a year of Spanish and I learned some ASL working with preschool kids.

3) The song is on Paul's Kisses on the Bottom CD, for which he won one of his 18 Grammy Awards. What compliment or accolade have you recently received?  Gloria said she enjoyed visiting my family country graphics website that I had years ago on Sunday Stealing last week.  That made me feel so good and I miss that website very much.  I let it go when I went back to work.

4) Paul is an honorary NYPD detective. He was given this designation for performing a charity concert after 9/11. Do you know anyone in law enforcement?  I know several people in law enforcement, I went to college with them and we hung out together.  We studied some of the same classes in Sociology and Psychology.  I studied education later.  I have had students of parents in law enforcement too.  They are good people.

5) Bob Dylan has said of Paul, "I'm in awe of McCartney. He's about the only one I'm in awe of. He can do it all. He never lets up. He's just so effortless." Tell us about someone whose talent you admire.  It would probably be educators I work with.  It takes talent to be able to teach "all" kids.  You have to keep coming up with different ways to present the same information until it makes sense to them.

This is the last Saturday  9 before Valentine's Day and so this morning we shall focus on the upcoming holiday.

6) The holiday is also known as The Feast of St. Valentine. Do you have a special meal planned for February 14?  We usually grab something from a restaurant, but this weekend we are expecting a lot of snow, so we will stay home.

7) The phrase "wear your heart on your sleeve" began in medieval times. On Valentine's Day, men would celebrate the holiday by displaying their lady love's name on their sleeves. If you were going to adopt this custom, whose name would you wear?  Karl

8) Women buy and send more Valentines than men do. Who received the last greeting card you sent?  My friend Lori.

9) Men buy and send more roses at Valentine's Day than women do. What's your favorite flower?  I am not sure that I have a favorite, I love all flowers.

  1. #5 interests me. It must be so hard to keep the smartest kids motivated when still doing right by most of the class.

  4. I am planning take-out tomorrow night, either Italian or seafood. If the weather is bad I'll probably have Italian because it is a block away instead of driving across town.

  6. I think your comment about teachers is spot-on. It takes a certain type of talent and personality to be a good teacher.

  7. I had 4 years of French in high school and 4 semesters in college. I can read it and am pretty good at understanding it.

  8. Teachers who inspire kids are the best. Kwizgiver and you are in line for a Medal in my book.
I had one year of French, then switched high schools and took 3 years of Spanish. ASL was because DH was getting deafer and we needed to be able to communicate over vast distances! Just kidding. His hearing stabilized. I can still yell loud enough.
