Secret Agent Man (1966)
Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.
1) This is the theme of a TV show that ran on CBS from 1964-1967. The series was produced, and originally aired, in England. The BBC has shared many shows with American audiences over the years. Can you name another? Victoria? I believe that one is from the BBC and we see it on PBS...does anyone know?
2) The show is about John Drake, a special agent dedicated to exposing plots that threaten world peace. A quick check of Netflix and Goodreads reveals that spy stories are just as popular today. Is espionage a genre you enjoy? Do you read books, or watch shows and movies, about spies? Both
3) The lyrics tell us Drake travels from the Riviera to Bombay. Where were you when you last spent the night away from home? Why were you there (vacation, business, international intrigue)? I think it was Oklahoma 4 years ago when my dad was still living. We would go down every summer and visit family. Sadly they have almost all passed away. We do not go anymore.
4) The refrain states, "They've given you a number and taken away your name." In today's digital world, that could now be said of all of us. Are you good at remembering your computer passwords? goodness no.
5) Patrick McGoohan, who played Agent Drake, went from being a good guy to appearing as a murderer on Columbo four times. Were you a fan of Columbo? I am not sure I have seen that show. I think I was too little.
6) Born John Ramistella, this week's featured artist, Johnny Rivers, grew up in Louisiana. He took "Rivers" as his stage name because he grew up along the Mighty Mississippi. If you were to change your last name based on the geography of the area where you grew up, how would you be known? Lake or Forest...maybe Woods or Hill.
7) In 1966, when this song was popular, Jacqueline Kennedy was the woman most Americans admired. What famous woman do you admire most? (She doesn't have to be American.) Maybe Laura Bush, I really do not admire women the way other people do. She isn't my hero or anything. I do LOVE watching her daughter Jenna Bush Hager on the Hoda and Jenna show. That has been a fun show for me to watch this summer. I more admire people in my real life.
8) 1966 also found another Jacqueline was in the news. Jacqueline Susann's first novel, Valley of the Dolls, was atop the best seller lists, even though it was savaged by the critics. What's your guilty pleasure? What book, movie, TV show, or song do you enjoy, even though you know it has little artistic merit? My son is reading Valley of the Dolls right now. My guilty pleasure is probably watching Hallmark movies.
9) Random question: Imagine you've been stranded alone in the woods for 10 days. No companionship, no internet or phone or TV. You have been sleeping in the dirt, living on berries and river water. Your rescuers drive you to a hotel. Upon check-in, what's the first thing you do? Take a shower and then get some food...then go to sleep.
I like the name Lori Lake. Easy to pronounce, easy to remember, and it could be the "real name" of a superhero (like Peter Parker is Spiderman).
ReplyDeleteRegarding that last one.. I belabored taht one.. would I eat or not.. Because after that shower I was sure I'd fall in bed and pass out!
ReplyDeleteHallmark movies is a good response to that particular question, although some of them are not too bad. Victoria is a British show; I don't know if it's BBC but it is a good show. I wonder if they renewed it for another season.
ReplyDeleteI happen to stumble across Victoria while channel surfing and I'm hoked
ReplyDeleteI wish I could enjoy Hallmark--the guys make fun of me and since the oldest one (lol the 53 year old) hogs the remote--its nearly impossible to watch it, smiles.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Saturday.
Love your answers. I do watch Columbo although they are old ones.
ReplyDeleteI really like your answer on #8, I am hooked on Hallmark.
Admiring the people we know is good. I can think of so many of the people in my life I admire. The only Hallmark show I watch is When Call the Heart (I think that is the name).
ReplyDeleteI love Hallmark but I don't feel guilty about it LOL!
ReplyDeleteI like your new name.. Lori Lake has a ring to it.
I've only seen Jenna a few times, but enjoy her a LOT! I agree with Annie about "Lori Lake." Sounds like a movie star!
ReplyDeleteI think the shower wins!! LOL That has been everyone's answer to #9. Fun questions this week. I am sad that Bond will be a woman next. Good grief!
ReplyDeleteVictoria is amazing. I loved Jenna Coleman on Dr. Who.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, but I think I read VOTD years ago...maybe in high school? I guess it didn't make that big of an impression.
ReplyDeleteAw, that's sad about most of your Oklahoma family being gone. I hate how my extended family has shrunk and changed over the years. We were all so close when I was growing up and had huge family holidays, but those days are long gone since we are all so scattered and my kids' generation isn't close at all...they barely know each other.
Have a great weekend and I'll "see" you again in August!
